From Paul Dail:
Even though I grew up writing genre fiction, my first professionally published work was a creative nonfiction piece about the birth of my daughter in “The Sun” magazine. Figuring this was a one-off, I continued writing fiction while teaching high school language arts, and I was surprised when another of my creative nonfiction pieces was accepted in a regional magazine. Then came a story published in “Writer’s Digest.”
In my early days of learning the craft of writing, I always admired people who wrote nonfiction, but I never thought readers would be interested in the true stories I might have to tell. When I left my teaching position and took on the role of managing editor for an arts and entertainment publication, I was able to explore the different forms of nonfiction. I still love writing fiction, but over the past decade, working for both online media outlets and consumer publications, I’ve realized that I also have a knack for a variety of nonfiction writing.
